- Abstract
- This thesis investigates the imbalances in the polycentric Region of Scania posed by the priorities made by infrastructural planning. Comparing the demographically and economically weaker southeastern municipalities of Scania with the much stronger growth poles located in southwest of the region. Further it looks at how the existing railway system contributes to cement a hegemonic structure within the region, and how the southeastern municipalities work together to influence the region in their priorities. Finally the potential effects of how interregional high-speed railway system can work to enhance intraregional inequalities will be studied with support of earlier research.

Finally the potential effects of how interregional high-speed railway system can work to enhance intraregional inequalities will be studied with support of earlier research.
Beyond the earlier research the conceptual framework that will be used to answer the research questions are based partly on Gunnar Myrdal´s theory of cumulative causation and partly on the concept of functional polycentrism. One qualitative interview has been conducted with the coordinator of infrastructural planning for southeastern of Scania. Also a qualitative document analysis of regional- and municipal planning documents has been made. The result of the study shows that the weak railway links between southeast and southwest most likely has contributed to intraregional imbalances, and a red flag should be raised that the future interregional high-speed railway system will further do so.
