- Abstract
- The study investigates the underlying factors and motives that led to the planning of collective housing in Sweden, from the 1930s until today. The brand new collective housing KomBo is used as an example to illuminate the current practice for collective housing planning. Through a critical review of various planning related documents and a total of five interviews, the study conclude the following: all collective housing units are a result of their time, the planning of collective housing has generally taken place in relation to a crisis - whether an energy crisis or housing crisis and KomBo differs from the more traditional collective houses while being a representation of contemporary times. Furthermore, the history of collective housing in Sweden can be seen in the light of both comprehensive as well as specific theories dealing with the “collective”. David Harvey’s writings on urban commons, as well as the fundamental ideas of smaller utopian societies, developed by Fourier are thus used in order to analyse my case and bring new discoveries to the surface.
