Abstract
In collaboration with Wallåkra stenkärlsfabrik, the possibility of making a factory building (dating from 1864) more energy efficient has been investigated. The aim was to seek practical solutions that could be applied to a historical building without compromising its external appearance. A series of solutions, such as internally improving the building envelope and options for renewable heating and ventilation systems have been identified and analysed. In order to analyse the effectiveness of the different methods, building U-value and energy calculations have been made using the program Isover Energy 3. For the sake of a easy and more valued comparison of the different methods. For the different insulation options for the exterior walls,... (More)

For the different insulation options for the exterior walls, a cost calculation has been implemented, using the program Wikells sektionsdata, to provide a further aspect for this comparison. The ability to improve existing buildings is fundamentally important for the sustainability credentials of both the building and the environment. Something that was proved possible to increase the energy efficiency was with additional insulation. Most importantly however, was by replacing the heating system. Finally, it was established that it is very difficult to decide which energy improving solution can be deemed best for existing buildings. This is because, in many cases it is indeed hard to think of and consider all the effects of a restoration. (Less)
