Abstract
Self-driving cars have the potential to revolutionize individual mobility. Before this can happen, however, they will have to overcome a series of hurdles, one of which will be to overcome resistance among potential users. Previous research about resistance towards self-driving cars has primarily revolved around demographic characteristics that correlate with a higher likelihood of resistance. This paper aims to contribute to the existing literature by investigating the relationship between resistance towards self-driving cars, personal experiences with the existing automotive system, and anxiety about the safety of self-driving cars. The constructs of anxiety and personal experience are proposed as possible additions to Antecedent and Consequences of Resistance to Innovation, an existing resistance model, and hypotheses are created to test the relationships that anxiety and personal experience are expected to show within this model. To test these hypotheses, quantitative analysis, including moderation analysis and exploratory factor analysis, is conducted using a sample of 198 responses. Two of the hypotheses were accepted, while the other two were rejected. Despite the rejected hypotheses, the authors argue that the significance of anxiety and personal experience has been demonstrated and recommend that further research about anxiety and personal experience as sources of resistance should be undertaken.
