Abstract
Algeria and Nigeria have both been subjected to domestic terrorism rather recently, responding to these threats in different ways. Whereas Algeria’s counter terrorism has been hailed as successful, Nigeria’s has generally been regarded a failure. This study seeks to explain the reason behind these diverging outcomes through a comparative analysis of the cases from the perspective of Critical Terrorism Studies.
To this end an ideal CTS-model of counter terrorism is applied from which a theoretically generated hypothesis derives, which stipulates that approximation to the CTS ideal equals success. In relation to the question it is therefore assumed that Algeria's counter terrorism lies closer to the CTS model's ideal than Nigeria’s. By... (More)

By comparing the two cases of counter terrorism, operationalized through the variables "short-term response" and "preventive measures", it is finally concluded that Algeria’s counter terrorism indeed approximates the CTS-model’s ideal to a greater extent than Nigeria’s, which subsequently answers the initial question asked.
