The main effort and purpose of this essay is to explain to what extent the Swedish army officers basic education relates to the demands of war. The study further aims to describe how the Swedish officers' basic education has evolved since the ending of the Cold War. The study develops its own theory, based on three other scientifically accepted theories, in order to analyze the scientific question. The question stated is: To what extent does Sweden take into account the demands of war in the academic basic education for tactical army officers? The study is conducted as a qualitative text analysis using indicators developed from the studies' theory. The analysed materiel consists of official documents from the Swedish Armed Forces and National Defense College. The result show that the basic education indeed considers and implements the demands of war, in a theoretical manner. The main conclusion of the study is the perceived unbalance between theoretical knowledge and practical ability accorded to the officer during basic education. This means that newly graduated officers need considerable training in leading and manoeuvring tactical units after completing the basic education. (Less)
