- This case study aims to add to the existing knowledge on monoculture in Sweden by investigating which approach Landskrona Municipality has on the topic, and how it is manifested in the municipality’s urban and regional planning. Landskrona has a long history of rationalized agricultural practices strongly characterized by monoculture to provide Sweden with cash crops for self-sufficiency on food and export. A document analysis based on three of Landskrona Municipality’s planning documents was conducted in order to answer the research questions. The findings from the analysis have been discussed in context of previous research as well as within a conceptual and theoretical framework. From the analysis, this study concludes that Landskrona Municipality does not consider monoculture itself as a problem. The study moreover argues that monoculture must be identified as a problem by the municipality itself in order to address monoculture and its effects on the biosphere. Furthermore, the study has identified at least two main reasons that could affect the municipality’s approach to monoculture. One reason being that the approach is highly shaped by the global market, and the other reason being the municipality’s geographical location and regional context. (Less)
