- Abstract
- The question of borders in regional planning have gained increased interest in recent developments of human geography. In the four corners of the region Scania, there are four different sub-regional organisations that work towards intermunicipal cooperation and development centred on a core growth engine. But how do these sub-regions relate to and affect the borders that surround them? To answer this question, a case study consisting of two municipalities, Kävlinge and Landskrona, and two different sub-regions, MalmöLundregionen and Familjen Helsingborg, has been conducted. The research draws upon theories which suggest that relational space leads to paradoxes in the planning process where planners must consider borders as porous and... (More)
- The question of borders in regional planning have gained increased interest in recent developments of human geography. The research draws upon theories which suggest that relational space leads to paradoxes in the planning process where planners must consider borders as porous and relate their work to a wider context. At the same time, they are bound to a political and administrative unit in terms of practical implication. A qualitative approach based on document analysis and interviews with municipal planners and sub-regional representatives has been carried out for the data collection. The empirical results show that soft space planning has a complex influence on borders and sub-regional practices in various ways. For the municipal planners, informal networks of exchanging knowledge and experience constitute the sub-regions. However, these networks create a distinct boundary to the bordering sub-region as they are ultimately practiced in, and tied to the municipals administrative territory. (Less)
