Abstract
In the ongoing library debate part of the focus has been on youth in libraries and how many libraries find them to be a challenging group to work with due to some occurring disturbances. In some cases the youth sections start to lean towards being youth recreation centers. Youth need somewhere to be that isn’t home or school and since there aren’t many open, free of cost public spaces, and many cities have reduced the number of youth recreation centers, the library becomes an important space for youth. In the previous research we were able to see that there are two different perspectives among the librarians, some think that the library should be a place for studying and reading and some think that the library should also be a social place... In the previous research we were able to see that there are two different perspectives among the librarians, some think that the library should be a place for studying and reading and some think that the library should also be a social place for culture and meetings.

In this thesis we have chosen to write about youth and youth sections in public libraries. The purpose of the study is to examine how librarians work with youth and how the surrounding society can affect the library space, and what significance the library space has. We also want to examine what strategies the librarians use in their work with youth and what competences they consider necessary in the work with youth in libraries. To explore this topic we decided to do six interviews with library staff from three different libraries in Skåne; in Malmö, Helsingborg and Landskrona. The theoretical frameworks that we have used are the four spaces model and institutional theory.

In our results we have seen that the librarians attitude towards youth matters in relation to how developed the youth section is. We have also seen that it is important for youth librarians to keep themselves updated on youth culture. It has become clear during our study that the youth aren’t prioritized, neither by the cities nor by the libraries. We have seen that the library space needs to have different functions that suits different needs and people. The youth need to be able to both listen to music and have some peace and quiet. One way to solve this could be to create smaller rooms in the room. The surrounding society affects the library space, and we have seen that it is important that the library exists as an open, free of cost public space. (Less)
