- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract
- Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate which measures that can be used to handle coastal erosion in Scania, southern Sweden. The purpose is to determine which alternatives that exist when choosing between different kinds of coastal protection and how these methods work. A literature review, including books, articles and electronic sources, was conducted. This was complemented with a field study at Löderup strandbad, for an example of a real-world application.
The results show that erosion protection measures are traditionally classified into hard and soft types. Hard types fully prevent or reduce erosion in an area and consists of for example groynes. Beach nourishment is an example of a defense that belongs to the soft...
Beach nourishment is an example of a defense that belongs to the soft protection type. This type of protection do not stop the erosion. Instead, it temporarily restores the appearance of the shoreline.
An important conclusion is that there is no universal answer to which type of erosion protection that should be used to treat coastal erosion in Scania. There are many factors, such as geologic and topographic conditions, the cause of the erosion, desirable effects and economic aspects that are important. This makes it a complex task to choose the right protection. Furthermore, the conclusions establish that coastal erosion in Scania will likely increase in the future as a result of an increasing sea level. Because of this, it is important to invest more in mapping potentially exposed areas, to minimize both risks and costs. (Less)
