Abstract
The purpose of this report is to evaluate the fire safety at Vasamuseet on Djurgården in
Stockholm. The museum has twelve floors and consists of the ship hall including large and
small exhibitions, a restaurant, a gift shop, and areas for staff.

In this report, the focus is the ship hall expanding from the 2nd floor to the 7th floor. The
economic and environmental loss are not taken into account because the main goal is the human
safety during the evacuation.

For an evacuation to be considered safe, the available escape time needs to be equal or longer
than the required escape time. Data analysis of the museum is vital in this report. A visit was

safety during the evacuation.

For an evacuation to be considered safe, the available escape time needs to be equal or longer
than the required escape time. Data analysis of the museum is vital in this report. A visit was
made to the museum before a deterministic analysis of potential fire events was considered.
Two scenarios were assessed as worst credible case: a fire in Storbåten and a fire in the visitor
coat racks. These scenarios were simulated in FDS and Pathfinder to determine the time when
safe evacuation cannot be assured.

The result from the simulation determined the fire safety in the museum is acceptable but can
be further improved with the following recommendations:

• Improve fire evacuation education with the museum staff to direct visitors to the closest
fire escape exit nearest to their location.
• Ensure the 7th floor evacuation has the highest priority immediately after the fire alarm
due to its high risk level.
• Establish a follow up routine for the fire education of the staff.
• Minimize the amount of electronic devices aboard the Vasa ship.
• Make it a requirement for the voice alarm to inform visitors of the actual cause of the
evacuation instead of “security reasons”.
• Add the wheelchair symbol onto the current evacuation signs at the stairwell J and K.
• Install manual alarm buttons in areas where there is a special risk of fire incidents. (Less)
