- The discursive constitution of a crisis
A discursive study of the crisis communication in Volkswagen´Sweden’s social media during Dieselgate 2015
Crises are unavoidable in today’s society and social media has come to be a platform for multiple
actors to discuss and impact the crisis. Social media has the ability to accelerate and trigger
events and situations in high speed, which has created a new starting position for organisations

Crises are unavoidable in today’s society and social media has come to be a platform for multiple
actors to discuss and impact the crisis. Social media has the ability to accelerate and trigger
events and situations in high speed, which has created a new starting position for organisations
and their stakeholders. Today’s research in crisis communication has an organisation-centric
approach and the field still lacks discussion regarding the complexity of the field, characterised
by multiple actors starting to communicate when a crisis occurs. The aim of this study is to examine crisis communication as a discursive phenomenon between multiple actors on social media. Therefore this study intends to generate deepened knowledge about the constitutional process of a crisis on social media. With a discursive approach a case study was conducted of Volkswagen Sweden’s involvement in Dieselgate 2015. Discourse analysis has been performed on the empirical material consisting of four posts and approximately 730 comments from Volkswagen Sweden’s Facebook
page. Results show that a crisis on social media is a co-creating process between different communicating actors where positive and negative voices meet and interact. Through the research of the crisis communication and discussions created around Dieselgate the results further show that
the crisis is constituted and represented in various ways but that a negative representation is dominating. To further examine the complexity characterising crisis communication this study emphasizes the importance of crisis communication research to move away from the organisation-centric focus that is dominating today.
