(More) - Green innovations are becoming more apparent in today’s business world, and therefore this thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of green product innovation. Particularly in the startup phase of a company, many challenges exist, and the strategic planning process is an important tool in assessing the market and in developing a superior strategy to go against competitors. To understand how startup businesses, incorporate green product innovations into their strategic planning process, a single, in-depth case study was chosen. The study assesses how KiteX, a green startup company, deals with the strategic planning process, and particularly how their green product innovation affects the associated challenges.
The steps of strategic planning were examined in the findings and analysis through the scope of a startup business and it showed that the team at KiteX did not have a conventional vision in regards to strategic planning. Furthermore, due to the lack of business experts, the company does not follow a specific framework but with the assistance of the literature review, a recommendation was drafted to highlight the need for strategic planning and builds an understanding for startup businesses that are looking to incorporate green innovations into their strategic planning, even when no framework is applied. The thesis further acknowledges that startups with no background in business operate in a different way, where the focus lies not on the company but with the product innovation as is the case with KiteX.
