- Abstract
- The aim of this essay is to investigate two scholastic theologians’ views on usury, to compare their arguments for the Christian usury prohibition and to see whether one can see a development in argumentation. The examined writers are St. Thomas Aquinas and Gerard of Siena and their works Summa Theologiae, De Malo, and De Emptione et Venditione; and De Usura, respectively. Before the investigation, an outline of the historical background of the usury prohibition of the Church is presented together with an introduction to the scholastic view on the nature of the natural law, upon which most of the argumentation is built.

After the authors’ respective views on the subject in each of their writings, and their respective arguments, both by authority and by natural law, have been unwrapped, the arguments are analysed separately and compared with each other. The arguments examined are, in turn: the Thomistic, the one based on the sterility of fungibles, the Aristotelian, the one based on the self-valuation of fungibles, and the one based on time sale. The conclusion is that a development can be seen in Gerard’s writing since Thomas’. Indeed, the Thomistic argument is expressly corrected by the former, which leads over to the question of whether the development has improved the argumentation. Further, there is a discussion over the relevance of the arguments in the theological understanding in today’s capitalistic world. (Less)
