Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore new fathers' attitudes and possible obstacles to seek help when experiencing symptoms of mental illness in the postnatal period. An additional purpose was to examine the relation between fathers help-seeking behavior, parental stress and the relation to the child’s other parent. The participants (N =172) were fathers with a child in the age of 0–18 months. A survey consisting of The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression (EPDS), Gotland Male Depression Scale (GMDS), The Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), Parenting Alliance Measure (PAM), The Swedish Parenthood Stress Questionnaire (SPSQ) and My Help-seeking Questionnaire (MHQ) were used to examine symptoms of depression, relationship quality, parental stress... The factor analysis show that four components (Private, Ideal, Distrust and Disguise) explains the obstacles that fathers may experience related to help-seeking. No significant differences between the symptomatic and non-symptomatic group were found. A lot of the new fathers shows signs of depression in the postnatal period and many of them experiences various obstacles to seek help when feeling unwell. For new fathers to get help it is important to continue to examine what can facilitate fathers’ help-seeking behavior. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
