Key words: Knowledge transfer, Organizational memory, Organizational culture, Project- orientated organization, Documentaion.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how a project-oriented organization that is being replaced with a high staff turnover continuously works the challenge of knowledge transfer, organizational memory and organizational culture.
Methodology: The study is a qualitative case study with an abductive approach. Data has been collected through semi structured in-depth interviews and with a review of LundaEkonomerna’s webpage. All the respondents were from the case organization. In order to obtain a true and fair view of the knowledge transfer within the case organization, the selection consisted of four board members from the period of 2017/2018 and four board members from the period of 2018/2019. Furthermore, data has been analyzed through coding.
Theoretical perspectives: The study is based on knowledge transfer and discusses how the phenomenon takes place in the organizational memory and the organizational culture. The theories have been selected in order to study LundaEkonomerna’s ability to transfer knowledge. Selected theories have been carefully selected in order to be able to conduct an adequate analysis and to be able to answer the research question.
Empirical foundation: The investigated case organization is LundaEkonomerna; a student union that was founded at Lund University School of Economics and Management in 1995. The empirical foundation is based on interviews that have taken place with previous and current board members. Furthermore, information has been gathered through the organization’s official homepage as well as through informal channels of the organization.
Conclusions: The results that the study has come up with are that there are both positive and negative aspects with LundaEkonomerna’s work with knowledge transfer. They lack with their documentation that seems to be too unstructured for it to be used in an efficient way. However, they seem to compensate for that with a strong organizational culture that makes their verbal communication more efficient than it would have been otherwise. The study shows that it is important that project-orientated organizations should ensure that they have a well-functioning documentation and that an organizational culture should only be seen as a complement to documentation.
