Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
This essay explores the social climate of the singing lesson. Particular attention is given to the physical interaction between singing teacher and student. The motive for this line of enquiry lies in the traces of the #metoo-movement when, amongst others, a couple of teachers were forced to leave their positions at Swedish music colleges due to accusations of sexual harassment during lessons. The aim of this study is to investigate how singing teachers at Swedish high schools work with the relational aspects of their teaching as well as questions regarding physical contact through conversations with former singing students. Additionally, the study seeks to examine the functionality of physical contact within the singing teaching... (More)
This essay explores the social climate of the singing lesson. Additionally, the study seeks to examine the functionality of physical contact within the singing teaching profession. Data was collected through qualitative interviews with former singing students from Swedish secondary and high schools and the results are presented using the concepts roles, power, relationships, physical contact and gender. These concepts are previously introduced and established in the chapter named Previous research and literary background and also form the base of the result analysis. The main results of the research show that the relationship a singing teacher has with students has a direct impact on their learning and how they perceive the physical contact they have with their teachers. A summary of how as a teacher one can work with questions regarding physical contact and interaction in one’s teaching is included at the back of the study. (Less)
