Abstract
Due to climate change, sea levels are rising exponentially on a global scale. It is threatening tocause a number of consequences, such as floodings and erosion, in coastal zones all over theworld. The coast of the swedish province of Skåne is especially threatened in comparison toother coastal zones in Sweden, and it is predicted that by the year 2100 the sea level will haveincreased with 1 meter in the area. Such an increase will threaten the sustainability of coastalsettlements, which pushes municipalities in the Skåne province to establish strategies andprotective measures against rising sea levels.

Such an increase will threaten the sustainability of coastalsettlements, which pushes municipalities in the Skåne province to establish strategies andprotective measures against rising sea levels.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to: 1. Examine what measures and strategies the coastalmunicipalities of Skåne are presenting in various planning documents, 2. How they aremotivating the chosen measures and strategies, and lastly, 3. How their motivations can beexplained by theories in human geography and environmental ethics. By examining these threetopics this thesis is providing insight into what might make coastal regions plan for certainprotective measures. The study has been conducted through examining municipal documents andinterviewing professionals experienced in adaptation to sea level rise. Theories of sustainabledevelopment, production of nature, cultural landscapes and anthropocentrism (among other) havefurther been used to analyze these three topics.

The results show that several coastal municipalities of Skåne plan for various combinedprotective measures, such as levees and beach nourishment. However, not planning for anymeasure at all is uncommon among the municipalities. The planned measures differ due tovarying social, economic and physical preconditions, as well as legislations and guidelines fromregional and national scales. Additionally, an anthropocentric and utilitarian view on the coastalzone as a landscape defines most municipalities strategies for climate change adaptation. (Less)
