- Abstract
- Over the years, humankind have made us dependent on fossil fuels. Not the least in terms of how we transport ourselves and goods. This dependence has a downside. The consumption of fossil fuels is contributing to global warming and climate change. An issue so urgent that we need to take action, and we need to do it now. With global agreements such as The Paris Agreement and The Sustainable Development Goals it is clear that climate change is a global political issue. This also stresses the importance of becoming independent from fossil fuels. As a step towards becoming independent from fossil fuels, our transports have to become fossil free. The consumption of fossil fuels is contributing to global warming and climate change. An issue so urgent that we need to take action, and we need to do it now. With global agreements such as The Paris Agreement and The Sustainable Development Goals it is clear that climate change is a global political issue. This also stresses the importance of becoming independent from fossil fuels. As a step towards becoming independent from fossil fuels, our transports have to become fossil free. Hence, a sustainability transition to a fossil free transport sector has to take place. A theory that explains the dynamics behind a sustainability transition is Multi-Level Perspective which makes the theoretical framework of this study. With an aim to illustrate how infrastructure planning on a regional level can influence such a transition Västra Götaland County is used as a case study. The strategies in their transport infrastructure plan have four major themes, development of cycling infrastructure, public transport, improvement of the railway infrastructure and measures aiming to favour vehicles run by biofuels and electricity. The essays analysis shows that their strategies only affect parts of the factors that need to change in order for a sustainability transition to take place. The conclusion states that in order for all necessary factors to change, other stakeholders, as well as the public, need to take action. Infrastructure planning can only contribute with a part of the solution, in order for a sustainability transition to take place and for the transport sector to become fossil fuel-free we all need to contribute and most importantly, work together towards the same goal.
