Abstract
Self-regulation is important for physical and socioemotional well-being as well as academic success. Development of self-regulation, including effortful control and executive function (EF), in early childhood is influenced by several aspects of parenting. The current study tested the idea that parents with higher ability and willingness to mentalize their children are more reliable assessors of their children’s effortful control. We also tested the possibility that children whose parents have higher levels of mind-mindedness might have higher self-regulatory capacities. Gender differences in parents’ mind-mindedness and assessments of self-regulation were explored. 118 children aged 24-60 months were assessed with four tests for EF. An... (More)

An online survey assessed parental mind-mindedness and assessment of their children’s Attentional Focusing, Impulsivity, Inhibitory Control and Shyness in the short version of the (Early) Childhood Behavior Questionnaire. Results showed that mind-mindedness was negatively associated with impulsivity, but could not confirm mind-mindedness as a mediator for the correlation between parents’ assessment of self-regulation and children’s EF. An interesting finding was mothers’ tendency to describe their daughters more mind-mindedly while the opposite was found for fathers. Further exploration of which parenting factors, if not mind-mindedness, influence the accuracy in parental assessment are implied for future research. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
118 barn i åldern... (More)

(Less)
