- Older people: Disgusting or in love? - Young adults’ descriptions of older people and their sexuality.
The purpose of this study was to investigate young adults’ descriptions of elder and older peoples’ sexuality. The respondents, who were all young adults between the ages of 20-30 years old, discussed their reflection of elder and older peoples’ sexuality. They were also asked to describe their future image of their sexuality as older people. Critical age studies were used as theoretical approach, where the concepts making of age, on-time, off-time as well as the ambiguous role were used as perspectives for analysing and understanding the collected empirics. Despite an unclear description of older people and their sexuality, negative attitudes flourished among the respondents. Ageing is inevitable, so how do the respondents relate to the negative attributes they ascribe elder and older peoples’ sexuality, when they discuss their future selves? This study suggests that young adults ascribed their own aging a differentiation compared to their description of older people in general. This strategy becomes a way to relate to the fact that they themselves eventually will belong to the group of older people, but they will be different. (Less)
