Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore how school counsellors at schools in low-socioeconomic areas in Malmö act and work in relation to child poverty and how they reflect on the school’s responsibility regarding child poverty. The method chosen for this study was qualitative research method with semi structured interviews with eight school counsellors from seven different schools. When analysing our result, we applied the Citizenship Theory by Marshall (1950), in order to demonstrate the work with enabling child participation and promoting an active citizenship in the society. Additionally, we used the theoretical formulation Sense of Coherence (SOC) by Antonovsky (2005) to understand the methods of strengthening each individual child.... (More)

The method chosen for this study was qualitative research method with semi structured interviews with eight school counsellors from seven different schools. When analysing our result, we applied the Citizenship Theory by Marshall (1950), in order to demonstrate the work with enabling child participation and promoting an active citizenship in the society. Additionally, we used the theoretical formulation Sense of Coherence (SOC) by Antonovsky (2005) to understand the methods of strengthening each individual child. These theories combined lead us to the concept empowerment and how schools work with empowering children. The result of this study showed that the schools in question take great responsibility to make children in poverty an active part of society, on the same conditions as other children and to help them become main actors in their own lives. Furthermore, the schools try to compensate for the children’s poor economic circumstances with both practical measures and broad knowledge about society. The school counsellors try to show the children possibilities and give hope for the future, despite the unfortunate economic situation they might be subject to. This study has highlighted the importance of acknowledging child poverty in the Swedish school in order to increase the possibility of children to participate in choices concerning their own lives; drawing the conclusion that work should involve encouraging children to partake in society. Work with social citizenship and Sense of Coherence makes it possible for children to become empowered as actors in their own lives. (Less)
