Understanding Brazilian funk through an emic lens: A qualitative study among youth in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Abstract
Over the last years, concerns have been expressed by the media and scientific literature about baile funk and Brazilian funk in general. Brazilian funk is a rebellious Brazilian music style which rose from the favelas from the 1980s onwards. Baile funk refers to funk dance parties which have a violent and aggressively sexualized nature. It is regarded as an expressive cultural phenomenon and it is of great importance to the people who attend them. Brazilian funk is often being related to violence, crime and sex. Over the last years, concerns have been expressed by the media and scientific literature about baile funk and Brazilian funk in general. Brazilian funk is a rebellious Brazilian music style which rose from the favelas from the 1980s onwards. Baile funk refers to funk dance parties which have a violent and aggressively sexualized nature. It is regarded as an expressive cultural phenomenon and it is of great importance to the people who attend them. Brazilian funk is often being related to violence, crime and sex. Despite the existing concerns, the popularity of Brazilian funk is growing continuously. Although funk used to be connected solely to the favela, its popularity has since more recent years dispersed over the various social classes in the rest of Brazil. By incorporating theoretical concepts such as identity, power and gender roles (machismo and feminism), this study investigates how Brazilian funk is experienced by youngsters. It is discussed that Brazilian funk can be regarded in terms of opportunities, struggles and senses of inclusion and exclusion. Although youngsters experiences relatively many struggles caused by funk, they nevertheless enjoy the opportunities funk has to offer. Additionally, this study shows that funk contributes to enhanced feelings of inclusion within the social classes and enhanced feelings of exclusion towards other social classes. (Less)
