Abstract
The primary aim of this study was to examine how employees at HVB-homes define and use relationship-based praxis in their daily work with youths, and how organizational context and individual ability enable or impede such work. Applying a qualitative method, where individual and nuanced experiences of the topic is a primary focus, a goal oriented snowball sampling was made in order to get in contact with interviewees, i.e employees at HVB-homes. A total of eight employees interviewed with the help of semi structured interviews. The main themes of the interviews were organizational culture, building relationships with the youths, working routines and challenges within the organization. The analysis of the empirical data was made by using a relationship-based model by Wilson et al (2008).

The results indicated that relationship building takes many forms and that emphasis is put on different factors, but a recurring theme was that relationships are built by showing interest, being clear and being emotionally and physically available. Additionally, making the youth involved and having a genuine dedication were referred to as important, but particular emphasis was put on the fact that building relationships takes time and requires patience. Using oneself as a tool was an important strategy to achieve this, but also to reflect critically on one’s own professional role and having a self conscious approach. Moreover, in terms of organizational possibilities and impediments, smaller HVB-homes, more manpower, flexibility and the possibility to overlook rules and routines were mentioned as particularly befinitical to working with a relationship-based focus. Lastly, positive relationships within the organization, and between the employees and the organization itself, were important. Especially between the employees and the management. (Less)
