Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine which the driving forces are to implement sustainability in
the business model and how this is implemented through a resource perspective. In the study this is analyzed in
order to describe how a company's resources are organized and customized for their sustainable initiatives. Our
ambition is to contribute with new knowledge about how the resource based-views relation to sustainability
looks like.
Methodology: A qualitative single-case-study with an abductive approach was conducted. The primary data
was collected through eight semi-structured interviews with relevant persons from the case-company.
Afterwards the empirical material was analyzed based on Jacobsen's (2002) method, followed by pattern
matching to reach a conclusion.
Theoretical perspective: The study originates from the resource based-view. This theory began with Penrose
(1959) and have evolved since then. Today the most accepted version of the theory is presented by Barney
(1991), this is also the version used in the study. Additionally, Teece, Pisano and Shuen (1997) formulated the
concept of Dynamic Capabilities which have been used to include the external environment. Finally,
Elkington’s (1997) book have been used in order to include the triple bottom line in the study. These theories
have enabled the creation of the theoretical points of reference that’s presented in the study.
Empirical foundation: The studied company Brinova Fastigheter AB, is active in the real estate sector, which
is a sector with a large negative impact on the environment. The empirical foundation is created through
interviews and a number of electronic secondary sources.
Conclusions: The financial incentives are superior to the extent that profitability is a prerequisite for survival.
Economic sustainability thus becomes essential and enables the environmental and social sustainability work.
Social and environmental work often leads to an improved brand, which is an economic incentive. (Less)
