Abstract
Problem – While extensive research has been conducted on the liabilities of newness that new ventures experience, there is a gap in research focussing instead on the abilities of newness. Understanding the more positive aspects that derive from being new is important to understand how new ventures survive and compete with, or even outcompete, established firms.

Aim – The aim of this study is to help new ventures to better understand their abilities of newness and how to leverage them to compete more effectively at an early stage. Specifically, the study focuses on identifying abilities of newness in the northern Dutch energy sector through studying different players that operate within the sector.

Aim – The aim of this study is to help new ventures to better understand their abilities of newness and how to leverage them to compete more effectively at an early stage. Specifically, the study focuses on identifying abilities of newness in the northern Dutch energy sector through studying different players that operate within the sector.

Methods – To answer the research question, a qualitative approach was chosen. Data was collected through conducting semi-structured interviews with various parties that all operate within the northern Dutch energy market. The parties included entrepreneurs, municipalities, an open innovation centre, accelerator and investors.

Results - The data revealed both existing abilities of newness identified in previous literature on the subject as well as newly identified abilities of newness such as innovativeness and co-creation. Together with the previously identified abilities of newness of creation legitimacy, fashion, flexibility, networks, bootstrapping and motivation they form a framework for studying new venture’s unique abilities.

Implications – This study departs from the traditional view that new ventures merely experience liabilities of newness. Instead, the study proposes that new ventures can benefit from unique abilities in the early phases that might be unavailable to established and larger firms. Future research should focus on testing and contextualizing the abilities in different sectors to develop a deeper understanding and advance the new field of research. (Less)
