With art museums included this can even be seen as a mission of forcing the barriers inherent in the theory of the cultural capital.My master thesis developed from the curiosity about how art museums and other art-exhibiting institutions such as galleries work towards this mission. The aim of this study is to show how these institutions work with mediation of artworks and exhibition subjects in the exhibition-medium.My study is theoretical grounded on Bourdieus assumptions on the cultural capital as crucial factor for meaning making in art museums. For a broader theoretical perspective on museums as institutions affecting one another my study takes further the theory of newinstitutionalism into concern to analyse similarities and differneces in how institutions work towards the mission of accesibility.On the exhibition level themultimodal designorientated perspective helps to analyse the potential of exhibitions for meaning-making and accessibility. The study is based on four qualitative semi-structured-interviewswith museum teachers, guides and directors as well as on three exhibition-observations aiming to study the practical implemantation of accesibilty-strategies expressed by the institutions professionals.My studys results show that all art-exhibiting institutions aim to support meningful relationmaking for their visitors. The aids institutions offer their visitors are traditional museum aids such as texts or guided tours.All museum professionals highlight that meaningful relations with what is seen in an exhibition first and foremost can be stressed by coming in contact with the visitors, asking questions and supporting the individual experiences and impressions. However just one museum which also included the visitor in aids placed in the exhibition such as texts.The results show further that contemporary and modern art exhibitions are often more orientated to be elegant and stylish following the white cube ideal. That often assumes practice in „art-watching“ of the visitor to „read the codes“ of an exhibition which excludes groups who don ̈t have the cultural capital. (Less)
