Abstract
The power of the buyers: the consumer’s role as an economic and political
being in Kooperativa Förbundet, c. 1898 — 1924
The aim of this study is to present the role of the consumer in the Swedish consumer cooperative union, Kooperativa Förbundet, c. 1898 — 1924. The study follows three of KF:s most prominent figures during the period: G.H. von Koch, Martin Sundell and Anders Örne, referred to in this study as “the great theorists of the Swedish cooperative movement”. The concepts consumer, cooperation a nd democracy will set the basis for the analysis of these three theorists’ work. In addition to presenting the theorists’ views on the consumer's role in the cooperative — the consumer as a member of society and the relationship... (More)

In addition to presenting the theorists’ views on the consumer's role in the cooperative — the consumer as a member of society and the relationship between the cooperation and class-politics will be analysed. In this context class-politics refers to the sources’ attitudes towards class-struggle, the question of who the cooperation really should serve, and the relationship with the labour movement. Kooperativa Förbundet had its first congress in 1899. The union’s struggle as a growing popular movement will therefore be studied, mostly in relation to the labour movement.
The study aims to put forward two theses: 1) that the consumer’s role according to the sources is that of an active subject, presenting a different form of “consumer power” than is often used today, and 2) that the cooperative theory during the studied period became less radical and less hostile towards capitalism while at the same time adapting to the hegemony of the labour movement.
