Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate how the phenomenon of an uneven breakdown by sex and differences between gender were described by group managers of an organization who offer camps for children with ASD. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with the six group managers within the organization. The primary theoretical framework used for the analysis was a social constructivism perspective, using gender theory and sociocultural theory. The results showed that several group managers expressed uncertainty to distinguish any correlations between the diagnosis and gender structures. Three recurrent themes were detected. The first, was that the uneven breakdown by sex was described to have an impact on the group and that this... (More)
The aim of this study was to investigate how the phenomenon of an uneven breakdown by sex and differences between gender were described by group managers of an organization who offer camps for children with ASD. The first, was that the uneven breakdown by sex was described to have an impact on the group and that this uneven breakdown might be caused by gender structures. The second, was that the group managers admitted that normative gender based assumptions exists both within the organization, as well as in society in general, which could cause a deficiency in equality among the children. The third, was that the group managers are working with a focus on the individual, which could minimize the effect of structural pressure that the children might have inherited from other social contexts. These findings suggest that the reconstruction of gender norms still could be an issue within human service organizations and therefore needs to be acknowleged further. Additonal research could develop the pedagogical working strategies to prevent inequality. (Less)
