- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of discrimination among disabled journalists. The background of our study is the growing interest within the media industry for newsroom diversity which aims at achieving better representation. Our definition of diversity includes people with disability in conformity with the Swedish discrimination law, which is accepted as standard within the institutions in Sweden.

The background of our study is the growing interest within the media industry for newsroom diversity which aims at achieving better representation. Our definition of diversity includes people with disability in conformity with the Swedish discrimination law, which is accepted as standard within the institutions in Sweden.
Earlier studies have shown the homogeneity of the newsrooms in Sweden but have failed to take into consideration the disabled journalists within the industry. There is therefore a lack of studies which show the proportion of journalists that have a disability. Our supposition is that journalists with disability are underrepresented in the newsrooms across Sweden. The aim of our study is to answer the following question: “What types of discrimination are disabled journalists subjected to in their work?”. We are analysing both the discrimination that happens within newsrooms and outside of them, when journalists are on the field meeting with interviewees.
This qualitative study consists of five in-depth interviews with five disabled journalists from Sweden. Three main themes are approached during the interviews: their experiences of newsroom diversity, the experience of equal treatment and their experiences of discrimination.
Result shows that their experiences can be divided between four types of discrimination: the structural which relates to the disabling working environment, the individual which relates to the lack of support from the decision-makers at their workplaces, the attitudinal which relates to the negative attitudes the journalists are subjected to and the journalists’ self-image which relates to the negative impact of discrimination on their self-confidence.
Our main finding is that the discrimination types are interrelated while particular, meaning that while they can be separately identified, they affect each other in the way that creates a circle-effect. As an example, co-workers’ attitudes towards disability maintains the structural discrimination while recruiters’ prejudices reinforce journalists’ feeling of alienation. In order to get rid of discrimination for disabled journalists, every type of discrimination needs to be addressed. (Less)
