- Abstract
- The importance of the historical contacts between mainland Finland and the island of Gotland has long been overlooked. The purpose of this analysis is therefore to focus on the contacts between these two areas during a period when cultural and material exchange was of utmost importance, the Viking Age.
A common jewellery type used by the Finnish women during the whole Viking Age period were the convex round brooches (in Swedish called ormspännen). 14 of these brooches have been found on Gotland, mainly as stray finds. By using the already established typological and chronological sequence over the brooches, we can determine how and if the intensity in contacts changed over time during the Viking Age. Furthermore, by looking at the distribution of the brooches on Gotland, we can establish where the concentration of brooches is at its highest and what this says about where the brooches most likely have entered Gotland. Finally, by looking at the surrounding contexts where the brooches have been found, we may learn something about the Gotlandic wearers of the brooches.
After the completed analysis, we can see that the contacts between Gotland and Finland have remained strong during the entire Viking Age period through a thriving exchange network between the areas, with an increase in intensity after 950. We can also see that several brooches are found around Visby, which further shows that the port at Visby must have been important already during the Viking Age. Finally, the contextual analysis of the two female graves where brooches have been found, tells us that some of the brooches found on Gotland might be a sign of Finnish migration, or a sign that the original usage of the brooches have transcended borders. In conclusion the importance of contacts between Finland and Gotland during the Viking Age should not be overlooked, and we need to continue exploring this network and other finds related to it, to understand the complexity of it.
