The aim of this study was to explore trans people's involvement in the lgbtq-community in order to create a deeper understanding of the processes that create solidarity and fragmentation within a heterogenous movement such as the lgbtq-community. This is a qualitative study and we conducted six semi-structured interviews with transgender individuals who were between 20 and 28 years old. We came in contact with the participants via organizations for lgbtq-people. The empirical material was analysed with the theoretical perspective of the sociology of emotions. The analysis shows that the participants experienced a feeling of otherness in society, as a result of meeting disrespect, lack of understanding and sometimes harassment from others. This led to negative feelings such as shame. By finding belonging in the lgbtq-community, the participants experienced feelings of safety, comfort, solidarity and an improved self-image. A critical part of our analysis shows that there is fragmentation within the lgbtq-community. We identified three different kinds of fragmentation: neutral fragmentation, value-based fragmentation and transphobia and exclusion. This fragmentation both creates feelings of belongingness but can also create a feeling of otherness within the lgbtq-community. (Less)
