- The way out - a qualitative interview study about the exiting processes out of prostitution

The aim of this study was to examine the process of exiting prostitution. Our questions focused on what is needed for someone to exit prostitution and what support and treatment is desirable. The chosen method was qualitative semi-structured interviews with in total seven people of whom three had personal experience of prostitution, three work with treatment and one had experience of both parts. The analysis was guided by theories about exiting processes as well as theories about shame, stigma and labeling. The conclusions from this study was that the support system in Sweden has adequate knowledge and qualifications for working with this particular target group but it is not spread out in the country and not all municipalities have enough resources. Furthermore, important for the interviewees with own lived experience of prostitution to exit was economy, social support, their own motivation and mental health and specific events. For some, the lack of other income was a barrier for exiting and for others having no one to turn to for help made it difficult. Additionally, when a couple of our interviewees tried to get help the response wasn’t adequate but instead increased feelings of distress. Feelings of shame and guilt as well as the experience of being stigmatized was common and something professionals need to address when working with people who have experience of prostitution. (Less)
