Abstract
People in Hong Kong continues to wrestle with the configuration of national identity and local distinctiveness, even though the fact of handover from the British to China was settled long ago. In the recent decade, several large-scale political protests have witnessed the hostile sentiments from Hong Kong people towards the central government and their shrinking attachments to the nation. The 2019 anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill movement provides an interesting case study on how the contradiction between national and local identities became manifested and exacerbated. Public discourses played a crucial role in articulating and constructing those identities by reporting and depicting the happened events, affecting readers’ or audience’s... (More)
People in Hong Kong continues to wrestle with the configuration of national identity and local distinctiveness, even though the fact of handover from the British to China was settled long ago. Public discourses played a crucial role in articulating and constructing those identities by reporting and depicting the happened events, affecting readers’ or audience’s perceptions towards the nature of reported events and imagination of the actors within. This thesis gives a close observation on the construction of national and local identities in the 2019 anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill movement, explored the influence of the colonial experience on identity formulation, and the relationship between national and local identities under the construction and reproduction of public discourses. Critical discourse analysis is implemented to investigate the discourses of two local newspapers and the Hong Kong government on five specific events during the movement. The results acknowledged that the colonial experience of Hong Kong contributed to establishing and maintaining the core values as the major part of local identity for Hong Kong people. The national and local identities represented different contents under public discursive construction, and most of the time they were not compatible. (Less)
