Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

Abstract
This thesis examines the cultures of the future (framtidskulturer) during the first four decades of the 20th century in a large Swedish urban and liberal cultural sphere including Sweden and Swedish America. The source material consists of New Year chronicles in the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Amerikanska Posten between 1904 and 1935. By examining the historical futures in the Swedish and the Swedish American newspapers, the thesis places itself on both the newly established historical research field of historical futures as well as on the well-established Swedish American research field.

The results indicate, to a large extent, a continuity in the culture of the future in Swedish Ame-rica during the period. In Sweden the period is instead characterized by transformation. One of the most significant results of the examination shows that the crises during the period, especially World War I and The Great Depression, did not affect the cultures of the future in some of the ways that previous researchers have argued. Previous research has for example often empha-sized crises as catalyst for cultural change. I show that in some of the cases the cultures are al-most not changed at all, and in other cases the change is just temporary. I also show, in line with Helge Jordheim’s theory of multiple temporalities, that in some cases there are not just one tem-porality but multiple. By comparing Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Amerikanska Posten, it has been possible to identify distinguished cultural features in both newspapers that otherwise would not have been discovered. The most noteworthy is the individualistic approach to the future that characterized Svenska Amerikanska Posten and the more collectivistic approach in Dagens Nyheter.

In the thesis I also construct two new concepts, culture of future (framtidskultur) and object of future (framtidsobjekt), that can be used when researching historical futures. I also develop a new method to examine historical futures which emphasizes a medium-long historical perspec-tive in which continuity and transformation are examined. The theoretical approach is inspired by Reinhart Koselleck’s two categories: the space of experience and the horizon of expectation, Michel Foucault’s theory of subjects and objects, Johan Asplund’s theoretical model for idea-critical research on future studies and Bernt Skovdahl’s analysis of the idea of progress during the 19th and 20th centuries.
