Abstract
Shared Reading is a reading promotion concept that originated in the United Kingdom and has, over the past three years, begun to engage various actors in Sweden including the Swedish hospital library. In the use of the method, health-promoting effects have also been identified, which is why Shared Reading has interested research in so-called medical humanities in a Swedish as well as an international context. The purpose of this master's thesis is to explore the concept of Shared Reading and the application that is taking place at the Swedish hospital library today. This is a part of investigating whether, how and if so, how the use of the method has changed the professional role of the hospital-librarian. In order to create an understanding of the role Shared Reading plays for the hospital librarian's professional role and for the hospital library in terms of legitimacy, new institutional theory has been implemented in the study along with a historical perspective on the hospital library's growth. The study is based on four qualitative interviews with hospital librarians who work or want to work with the method. The result and the analysis show some difficulties in implementing the method within the hospital library's operations, which mainly has to do with financial aspects as well as notions within the organization about what the hospital library should today devote to. At the same time, opportunities in using the method relating to the hospital library's potential to become a greater part of the patients' healing process are seen, in which collaboration with specific rehabilitation staff becomes clearer. This is a smaller study, which is why more research on the hospital library's role in reading and health promotion methods is generally required. (Less)
