(2020) VTVL01 20201Transport and Roads
- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- BIM, Building Information Modeling, is an increasingly common way of
working. This means that different objects build up an overall 3D-model where you can find lots of information about these objects. An object can be anything from a bridge pillar to an electric pole. The purpose of this report is to, based on the Swedish Transport Administrations’ as a client, investigate the advantages and disadvantages of total implementation of BIM and in this way remove the document-based information. Results and discussion are based on a quantitative interview study where the following questions is answered:
- How is the work with BIM experienced in the Swedish Transport
Administration’s investment project and in project management around
rail projects?
- What are the obstacles to the initiation of BIM?
- What opportunities are there to remove these obstacles, and what can be
done to facilitate?
After interviews, it was clear that the attitude towards BIM is generally very positive, but that there are many problems that need to be addressed. There are perceived barriers when it comes to the generation issue, lack of knowledge, unclear requirements which leads to great freedom of interpretation, standardization, resources, and storage.
Suggestions for solutions that emerged during the interviews were to increase the level of knowledge about BIM by introducing training with increasing difficulty over time, this would not only increase knowledge about BIM but also contribute to a better view of BIM as a working method. It is also called for clearer requirements that would eliminate a large part of the freedom of interpretation that exists today and that some sort of standard is introduced where the information will be similar in all projects. In order to make this possible, a carefully prepared plan is required in the initiation phase, where you allocate resources to cover the entire process so that you do not realize that it becomes too expensive and cancels in the middle of the initiations phase. In addition, the Swedish Transport Administration must dare to take the leap towards the future and invest in BIM. (Less)
