This dissertation will analyze how fashion and language is used to create stereotypes in film. Sex and the City will be used as the case study and the aim is to analyze the correlation between fashion and language in the making of the four main characters stereotypes.
we will analyze these following questions: Why and in which way is fashion being used in Sex and the City to express sterotypes, and how and why is the language being used to enhance the character’s stereotypes?
The analysis has been done by Roland Barthes’ social semiotics theory of a screen shot of a scene in the first season of Sex and the City. The semiotic analysis has been combined with a social semiotic analysis of that scene of which the screenshot i s taken from. The first season of the TV-series has also been analyzed with a qualitative content analysis method.
Our results suggest that the use of fashion and language in Sex and the City is intertwined since clothes and language is what together creates the base of a stereotype. The results suggest that we are not able to identify the stereotype if it’s not given their socially constructed attributes. (Less)
