Sociala medier och självkänsla: en korrelationsstudie

Sociala medier är idag ett självklart inslag i många människors liv, och deras utrymme i samhället fortsätter att expandera. Vår självkänsla är viktig för vår psykiska hälsa då en bra självkänsla fungerar som ett slags “psykologiskt vaccin” mot psykisk ohälsa. Med detta som bakgrund är det tydligt att det är ett viktigt fokus att bygga på den forskning som redan har undersökt sambanden mellan sociala medier-användande och självkänsla. Sociala medier är idag ett självklart inslag i många människors liv, och deras utrymme i samhället fortsätter att expandera. Vår självkänsla är viktig för vår psykiska hälsa då en bra självkänsla fungerar som ett slags “psykologiskt vaccin” mot psykisk ohälsa. Med detta som bakgrund är det tydligt att det är ett viktigt fokus att bygga på den forskning som redan har undersökt sambanden mellan sociala medier-användande och självkänsla. Den aktuella studien syftade därför till att undersöka sambanden mellan individers grad av självkänsla och hur mycket de använde sociala medier, hur mycket vikt de lade vid sitt eget material på sociala medier samt hur okritiskt/kritiskt de såg på andras material på sociala medier. Sammanlagt 123 individer besvarade en webbenkät som bestod av Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale samt en skala kring sociala medier-användande.
Inget signifikant samband uppmättes mellan självkänsla och hur mycket
individer använde sociala medier. Däremot visade resultatet att ju lägre
självkänsla individer hade desto mer vikt lade de vid sitt eget material på sociala medier och desto mer okritisk syn hade de på andras material på sociala medier. Resultaten pekar på att det inte är hur mycket man använder sociala medier som har samband med ens självkänsla, utan att det är hur man tänker och känner kring sociala medier som har samband med ens självkänsla. Detta innebär att det främst är individer som bryr sig mycket om sociala medier som eventuellt behöver psykologiska insatser. (Less)

The present study therefore aimed to investigate the correlations between
individuals' degree of self-esteem and how much they used social media, how
important their own material on social media was to them as well as how
uncritical/critical their view on other people’s material on social media was. 123 people in total responded to a web survey that included the Rosenberg SelfEsteem Scale and a scale about social media usage. No significant correlation was attained between self-esteem and how much individuals used social media.
Conversely the results showed that the lower self-esteem individuals had, the more important they found their own material on social media and the less critical were their views on other people’s material on social media. The results therefore suggest that it is not how much one uses social media that shows a correlation with self-esteem, instead it is how one thinks and feels regarding social media that shows a correlation with one's self-esteem. This means that it is mainly individuals who care a lot about social media that might need psychological interventions. (Less)
