(Less) - Abstract (Swedish)

Key words: Event study; Efficient-market hypothesis; Information asymmetry; Market reaction; Equity issuance; Directed share issue; Rights issue; Abnormal return; Announcement date.
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine if the announcement of a rights issue or directed share issue generates an abnormal return and if there are any differences in the abnormal return between the two.
Theoretical perspective: The theoretical perspective is based on previous research as well as theories appropriate for the purpose, such as: The Efficient-market hypothesis, Information asymmetry and Signalling theory.
Empirical foundation: The observations presented in this study consists of 614 rights issues and 312 directed share issues by public, Swedish companies, performed during the period of 2009-2019.
Result and conclusion: The announcement of a rights issue seems to cause a negative reaction to the stock price while the announcement of a directed share issue seems to cause a positive reaction to the stock price. It seems that the difference in stock price reaction could, to some extent, be explained by the theory of information asymmetries. (Less)
