Abstract
Gotland Regiment P 18 was disbanded in 2004. Gotland had been a historically
important strategic island for over 200 years and the Regiment was one of many that where to be disbanded due to economic restraints and a new Swedish security policy. The aim of this thesis is to examine why the decision was made due to the fact that the Regiment was re-established in 2018. Was it a rational decision or was it a decision based on political negotiations and bargaining? The analysis of the factors behind the decision was conducted by the use of Allison & Zellikows theoretical models for decision making, Rational actor model and the model for Governmental politics. The result of the research question is that it is likely that it was a rational... (More)

The analysis of the factors behind the decision was conducted by the use of Allison & Zellikows theoretical models for decision making, Rational actor model and the model for Governmental politics. The result of the research question is that it is likely that it was a rational decision based on the information and knowledge that the decisionmakers had at that time. It is likely that there was no bargaining or negotiations if the Regiment where to be closed or not. A joint security assessment made by the Swedish Armed Forces and the Defense Committee deprived Gotland its strategical importance. An assessment, that from a historical perspective, showed to be inaccurate. (Less)
