Abstract
An increased proportion of trips made by bike is important part of a more sustainable transportation system. It provides benefits both at an individual and societal level – especially when replacing trips that would otherwise have been made by car. To get an understanding of what influences cycling, a statistical analysis is carried out that shows links between socio-economic factors, the physical environment and the share of cycling in the municipalities of Stockholm County. The results show that the share of bicycle trips has a statistically significant relationship with 10 of the 14 factors examined. Based on Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, three themes are identified from the results. A high level of education and income results in... (More)
An increased proportion of trips made by bike is important part of a more sustainable transportation system. A high level of education and income results in a high proportion of cycling trips. Likewise, an urban environment with proximity to the inner city and high population density has a positive impact on bicycle travel. The last theme identified is the bike's relationship to the car, where good access to a car gives a low proportion of bicycle trips. The reason why these factors influence the decision to cycle is analyzed based on Ajzen's attitudes, social norms and perceived behavioral control. This study increases the understanding of the decision-making process behind the choice of means of transport, which can contribute to actions and investments for increased bicycle travel being directed more efficiently.
