This thesis focuses on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the public transportation network in the Scania region of Sweden during its first year, as well as conducting an informative discussion into how human behaviour has changed during the course of the pandemic and how the underlying effect of it relates to the research question.
It poses passenger data collected from Skånetrafiken and data concerning the number of confirmed cases and the death toll from Folkhälsomyndigheten, together with advise and recommendations from pertinent government agencies and institutions against previous research consisting of an international commuting study performed in the early stages of the pandemic, the insights into pandemic response through the social- and behavioural sciences, as well as through official international guidelines regarding a sustainable response to a transition between the “new normal” and a “new future”.
An exploratory case study was executed, and firstly came to the conclusion that the public transport network had indeed been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but also that the initial shock settled somewhat during the course of the first year despite a reported 15 years’ worth of progress lost in commuting development within the space of 10 months.
It is also discussed how human behaviour changed throughout the course of the pandemic’s first year. Some of it being contributed to desensitization from the length of the pandemic, but also from advice and recommendations changing back and forth as circumstances changed, while also concluding the importance of great and transparent leadership in relation to dependable sources, communication, and collaboration, not just between individuals, but also across national boundaries.
