- Abstract
- This thesis aims to emphasize the complexitivity in the relationship between urban planning and democracy. Two renovation projects in Malmö, Sweden, during the 1970s and 80s, in the middle of an extensive national housing reformation, are used to demonstrate examples of particularly ambitious designs to involve citizens in planning processes; the neighborhoods of Östergård and Kroksbäck, in which the project groups had expressed intentions to use action research and co-production models in a way to achieve ideal democracy and justice. - This thesis aims to emphasize the complexitivity in the relationship between urban planning and democracy. Two renovation projects in Malmö, Sweden, during the 1970s and 80s, in the middle of an extensive national housing reformation, are used to demonstrate examples of particularly ambitious designs to involve citizens in planning processes; the neighborhoods of Östergård and Kroksbäck, in which the project groups had expressed intentions to use action research and co-production models in a way to achieve ideal democracy and justice. In addition to the official reports from the project groups a document analysis is used to paint a picture of the general opinion of each neighborhood’s developments from an outside perspective. In the analysis the result of the both projects are put in relation to the theoretical framework which includes theories about deliberative democracy and Susan Fainstein’s The Just City. The conclusion points to a complex balancing act between citizens’ expectations and the city’s possibilities and resources to realize them, where the result may be interpreted as an increasing feeling of alienation by the residents, despite the optimistic intentions to accomplish just the opposite.
