Pilot Redundancies Related to Covid19
(2021) FLYL01 20211School of Aviation
- Abstract
- As of January 2021 Covid19 had left more than half the world’s pilots unemployed (Reuters, 2021).
This paper aims to investigate how pilots are affected in terms of attitude and new career choices
following a redundancy caused by Covid19 and use these insights to help future pilots be better
prepared to handle similar crises. This qualitative study interviewed five former Norwegian Air
Shuttle pilots who were made redundant due to corona. The semi-structured interviews were analysed
using grounded theory to expose common themes referring to the problem definition. The results
found significant changes in attitude, a need for a backup plan and that future pilots would do well to
implement a portfolio career and remaining perseverant.... (More) - As of January 2021 Covid19 had left more than half the world’s pilots unemployed (Reuters, 2021).

is addressed as well as the challenges and biases of performing a thematic and subjective analysis
without a rigid guideline such as is the case when using the version of grounded theory proposed by
Glaser (1992) and Charmaz(2006). (Less)
