Abstract
The study aims to investigate the behavior of vulnerable road users at tramway crossings along the new tramway in Lund. The purpose is to find connections between potentially risky behaviors and the tramway crossings’ design and regulation. Furthermore, the study examines the functionality of the crossings and the reasons behind the chosen design and regulation. The studied crossings are located at tram stops with the tracks placed either in the middle of the street or next to the sidewalk. The crossings are either signalized or non-signalized. Used regulations are warning signs, multicolor traffic signals and signals with covered green lights. The results show that potentially risky behaviors do not vary between the signalized and... The results show that potentially risky behaviors do not vary between the signalized and non-signalized tramway crossings. On the other hand, the proportion of potentially risky behaviors differs between the observed tram stops. The difference may be due to different conditions at the sites, but it may also be due to the different placement of the tracks. An additional result is that the probability of a potentially risky behavior increases if a road user walks or rides a bicycle in a group. The functionality of the tramway crossings is considered acceptable based on observational studies. However, roadside interviews indicate that the signals with covered green lights are difficult to understand. The roadside interviews also showed a lack of knowledge about leaving a free path to the tram. (Less)
