The aim of this essay is to examine the phrasing of gender equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development focusing on Goal 5: Gender Equality. The focus of the study also extends to analyze the potential consequences of the goal’s phrasing and understand why the empowerment of women and girls are seen as essential for the progression on all levels of sustainability. Through qualitative interviews with participants working with sustainability and Agenda 2030 and our theoretical framework including social constructionism, hegemonic masculinity, intersectionality and postcolonialism, this thesis offers a perspective on gender equality relative to sustainable development in a global context. The conclusion establishes that the phrasing of gender equality in the agenda is based on the social and political context in which it was created. The consequences that follow are that gender equality is reduced to be seen as a women's issue where women's positions worldwide become homogenized, and where men's roles are excluded. The study also shows that women’s potential today is left unused since women are categorized as a powerless group. This view on women is problematic in many ways, especially since this study shows that the world will not become sustainable if women keep getting excluded from decision making processes. (Less)
