An exploratory study on the consumer behavior at collection and delivery points in Helsingborg municipality - A consumer’s perspective

- Abstract
- Purpose - The collection-delivery points in Sweden are the main delivery method and facilitates a growing volume of parcel deliveries from e-commerce. As the model has been implemented on such scale in the country, the negative externalities previously outlined in the literature can get magnified in the context of the Swedish consumers. It is important to gain a deeper understanding on every aspect of the consumer collection behavior at the CDPs and especially on which individual factors facilitate a more responsible travel mode choice and trip chaining behavior. However, research on the CDPs has so far fallen short at providing attitudinal and perceptual data. Consequently, the purpose of the study is to expand the current knowledge on... (More)
- Purpose - The collection-delivery points in Sweden are the main delivery method and facilitates a growing volume of parcel deliveries from e-commerce. Consequently, the purpose of the study is to expand the current knowledge on the behavioral factors that have an impact on consumers’ mobility patterns in their collection behavior.
Design/Methodology/Approach – 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted in the data collection process. The sample was selected directly from CDPs in different areas of Helsingborg municipality and the emphasis was laid on the influential factors that enable trip chaining and sustainable travel mode decisions based on the consumer’ perspective.
Findings – The behavioral components and the socio-demographic aspects of the influential factors of consumer collection behavior are interconnected and it is hard to separate them in order to yield behavioral findings. The research yielded rich findings in the collection behavior patterns of consumers in Helsingborg, but most of the findings would be captured by a quantitative study Contributions – Existing white spots on latent factors that affect consumers travel habits when they collect a package from the CDPs have been filled. Additional aspects of information have been added to the current knowledge. The findings of the thesis can be used as a pre-cursor of a better-informed quantitative study on the subject. (Less)
