Teoretiska perspektiv: Studien lyfter tidigare forskning kring franchising,

(Less)

Research question: How do franchisors view their role in the relationship with their franchisees?

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to give a deeper understanding of the franchisor’s role in the relationship with its franchisees. More specifically, by doing a case study at Sombro Mäklarbyrå the study aims to develop already existing theory about the franchisor’s role in the franchise relationship.

Methodology: In order to answer the study’s research question and achieve its purpose a qualitative case study has been made in the form of semi structured interviews. The study is based on social constructivism, where an abductive approach has been used.

Theoretical perspectives: The study takes up previous research about franchising, the franchise partnership and the franchisors role in the relationship with the franchisees. Furthermore, the study uses the agency theory and explores its applicability on the franchising relationship as a theoretical basis, where the agency theory describes the importance of the
contract in the relationship.

Result: The empirical result indicates that the interviewed franchisors consider themselves adopting five roles in their relationship with their franchisees. The five roles are information disseminator, guide, supervisor, culture carrier and motivator.

Conclusions: The study shows that there are explicit roles that the franchisor takes on from what is being defined in the contract. Furthermore, implicit roles have been identified which they adopt despite that these roles go beyond the defined obligations in the contract. The implicit roles are taken on in purpose to create uniformity in the franchise chain. The agency theory does not pay regard to the implicit roles and therefore we have developed the theory in order to provide a better understanding of the franchisor's role in the relationship. (Less)
