(Less) - Abstract

Research Question: How do women perceive that they can be in their role as a manager?
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to create a deeper understanding of how women in management perceive stereotypical expectations on the managerial role and gender role. Furthermore we intend to examine, through an individual perspective, experiences from women in managerial roles.
Methodology: In order to fulfill the purpose and answer the research question, a qualitative study has been done with semi-structured interviews with twelve female managers. The study’s ontological standpoint is social constructionistic with an abductive method.
Theoretical Perspective: The literature review presents previous research regarding management and managerial work. This is followed by research on gender in relation to management, in order to get an understanding of the social expectations of female managers. Thereafter, Role Congruity Theory and Double bind is presented.
Empirical Foundation: The empirical findings regarding the women’s experiences of their situation as a female manager is presented. This is followed by an analysis of how the women’s experiences can be interpreted as if they are oppressing themselves and devaluing their situation in order to reach a certain ideal.
Conclusion: The interviewed female managers are experiencing a double bind, but they reformulate the stereotypical expectations to an ideal to which they are striving to act according to. (Less)
